Engine and sound

The R8 Spyder uses a naturally-aspirated V10 making 562 hp, with all-wheel drive and a top speed of 200 mph. The C8 Convertible has a mid-engine 6.2L V8 with 495 hp and a 194 mph top speed. The V10 is the more dramatic sound; the V8 is still quick and far more car than most first-time renters have driven.

The roof

The R8 has a folding soft top. The C8 has a retractable hardtop. Either way you can drive open on a clear afternoon along Ben Franklin Drive or across the Ringling Bridge, and close the roof when the weather changes.

The R8 Spyder is $799 a day or $399 for four hours. The C8 Convertible is $399 a day or $200 for four hours. For a short sunset run, the C8 is the lower-cost way to get a top-down exotic.
