Driving an Exotic Car in Florida Rain: Practical Tips
Florida weather can change quickly, and summer afternoons often bring heavy rain. A powerful car on a wet road needs more care than usual, but it is very manageable if you plan for it.
Slow down and leave space
Wet roads lengthen braking distances. Drive slower than you would on a dry day and leave a larger gap to the car in front.
Be gentle with the throttle
High-horsepower, rear-drive cars can lose traction if you apply power abruptly, especially from a stop or in a corner. Use smooth, progressive inputs.
Watch for standing water
Heavy rain can leave water pooled on roads, and driving through it too fast can cause hydroplaning. If a road is flooded, turn around rather than risk it.
Convertibles and weather
If a storm is forecast, check the roof before you set off, and put it up before the rain arrives. Our guide to convertible weather in Sarasota covers when to expect a good top-down day.
Choose the car for the day
The Nissan GT-R has an all-wheel-drive system that helps on wet roads, while a mid-engine, rear-drive supercar asks for more care. If the forecast is poor, ask us which car suits the day.
Safe is better than scenic
If visibility drops or there is lightning, pull into a safe place and wait. The weather usually passes quickly.
